Suspended for more than 20 million years at an altitude of 1000m, today between Grenoble, Valence and Die, it is a natural fortress of green and white tourism that is offered to you!
An attractive geology since the dawn of time...
In the Paleolithic period , prehistoric men already came here from the valleys to collect and cut high-quality flints, which were found in a wide radius around the massif. An activity that intensified over a long period of time to then attract a few hunter- gatherers and other travelers . The harsh climate that reigned at the time meant that man generally only stayed there during the summer season. He therefore left few traces in our cavities.
The rest would come much later with the rise of agriculture and livestock farming , and even forestry .
Some scars from the past that cannot be forgotten...
The Vercors massif is famous for the Resistance fighters who took refuge in its maquis during the Second World War. Its famous character of a natural fortress, difficult to access for the uninitiated, will allow self-sufficient living and a rallying of the allied forces. The "Free Republic of Vercors" was born before being later annihilated by the Nazis. History will remember the heroes who gave their lives in a fight to hold back and divide the German troops , while the allies landed in Normandy and Provence. You know the rest...
The countless caves of the Vercors played a major role in the organization of the resistance at that time : equipment was often hidden there or men and women were able to take refuge there, like the infamous makeshift hospital of Saint-Martin moved to the Luire cave and unfortunately discovered by enemy forces...
